Kromeriz

May 9, 2012 - Kromeriz & Arch Bishop's Wine Cellar

Today we took a field trip to Kromeriz Arch Bishop's Palace and wine cellar.
This was a beautiful palace and it is also on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.
Random fact about the palace, Amadeus and Immortal Beloved were both filmed here.

Unfortunately, no pictures were allowed inside ... again.  So here are a few pictures from outside of the palace.  This tour was a little fun though because we had to wear these slip on shoe covers so we would damage the flooring, this also meant that we were surfing on the floors with our shoes they made us wear.  Even Jan, our Czech professor, was doing it!

Our tour guide was very thorough to say the least.  Each and every room we went into, she described each and every item in those rooms.  Don't get me wrong, going into detail was great but most of us started tuning her out at points because it was too much information!  It was good information but it was a lot.

Thea guarding the palace.

I absolutely love this statue, we had seen it before in Prague.
Elin, Hayley, and Katie waiting for our tour to start.

Not too sure what Andrew was doing here ... you can create your own caption here!
The outside of the building was beautiful, we stood waiting in the courtyard.

The palace gardens were are also on the world heritage list.
I cannot imagine the work that has to go into making them look like that.
Caleb enjoying his tour. hehe
This is the view from above of the courtyard, one can appreciate it more from an aerial view.

This is the entrance to the Arch Bishop's Wine Cellar.
I giggled as we were going here because I do not drink but I could appreciate what we were going to see.  Plus, I just gave my wine to everyone else to drink!

We had to go down a long tunnel to get to the cellar, the ground was covered in water.

I was not prepared for all of the wine casks and how huge they were!
Some held thousands of liters of wine.

The top number in the picture with Caleb is how many liters this one barrel held ... 19,220!!!

We were then taken to where all the bottles were kept, Ann was in heaven in here!

Ann was just a bit excited about the wine tasting!

Cheers Dr. Clark!

Don't worry Laura, there is more, a lot more!

Caleb, I don't think it works that way.

Yes, I had wine in my glass and smelled it .... then poured it into someone else's glass for them to drink!

Nom, nom, nom!

Ummmm .... ok, guys.

Going back up the slippery stairs to the surface.

That is about what it was like for us everywhere we went ... not being able to read the language.

Some more drain covers!

On the way back, we got to see more of the beautiful yellow fields that were everywhere now that it was warmer.  It was so pretty!

This was a fun day for all of us.  We got to see another UNESCO World Heritage site and it was another opportunity to see more of the Czech Republic.  I do love this country!
