May 15, 2012 - Sedlec Ossuary aka Bone Church and Kutna Hora
Our final group field trip was to explore more of the Czech Republic.
Our first stop was to the Sedlec Ossuary. When I found out that I would be able to take this trip, I did some research about the places where we would be going to...this is one of the places I had been super excited to see, I wasn't disappointed.
Side note about this picture, it was in the bathroom by the church and I had to take a picture of it.
Why is this even a sign? Really? Who does this?
The church is so pretty from the outside and is surrounded by its graveyard.
The Sedlec Ossuary is located just outside of Kutna Hora.
The inside of the church has been decorated using human bones that were unearthed from the cemetery as it became too overcrowded, especially from the Black Death. There is a little of everything in there.
A cross
A giant challis
The ceiling and pillars were decorated.
A giant chandelier in the middle was most impressive.
The coat of arms was outstanding, I can't imagine how much work that would have taken.
There were four giant pyramids created from the bones too.
And when you went upstairs, it was a small "normal" looking chapel, no bones.
Drain cover!
After we were done visiting the Bone Church, we went to Kutna Hora where we would be spending the night. We actually stayed in a hotel and had bathrooms in our rooms!
This is Kutna Hora's column in the city center.
We found a nice place to eat in a back courtyard, they even had a menu translated in English.
Below is part of the menu ... What Swims and Flies ... very creative!
Where there is a pillar...there is Caleb!
Another drain cover.
A police car hehe
They also had these cool maps all over Kutna Hora to help you find your way around.
You are .... HERE.
One of my favorite parts of traveling was going off and exploring the places we were visiting, no plan, just wandering. We found some of the coolest, unexpected places like this.
We found St. Barbara's ... we would be going back as a group the next morning before leaving Kutna Hora.
That night we went and found a fun sports bar and bought a bunch of snack foods at a local grocery, then we moved some extra chairs into the guy's room and played cards. A nice end to the day.
