Rome, Day 3

April 18, 2012 - Rome, Day 3

This is one of my favorite places we went to ... I finally got to go our last full day in Rome.  It was one of the places I wanted to go but every time we had gone by, it was already closed.  So we made sure we were there during open hours, unfortunately, it was also raining like crazy but we made it!

It is completely fascinating to me that the Romans were able to construct this building without any form of modern technology.  It is almost 2,000 years old and I didn't know this before I went but it was also used as a religious site.
The biggest feature of the Pantheon is the ceiling and it's perfect shape.  It is still the largest un-reinforced concrete dome ever built in the world.  It is also the shape of a perfect circle half...if you put a giant ball inside of the pantheon, it would sit perfectly inside of the dome and just touch the floor - the dimensions are that perfect.  Amazing!

Little known fact ... the painter Raphael is buried in the Pantheon,
this is a picture of his tomb (above and below).

Ann and Thea inside the Pantheon.

The architecture is beautiful...not enough words to express it.
Me, Ann, and Thea at the Pantheon.

We did not do much on our last day in Rome besides go to the Pantheon.
We went and did a little souvenir shopping and had another great meal in Italy!
So excited for the next stop on our adventure ... The Cinque Terre!
