April 13, 2012 - Leaving Vienna
Just a quick peek at our room in the Happy Hostel before we head off to Venice!
Just a quick peek at our room in the Happy Hostel before we head off to Venice!
Two sets of bunk beds for Thea, Laura, Elin and myself.
Mini living/dining room area ... even had a chandelier!
Ann had her own bedroom in our suite.
Two bathrooms and kitchen ...it was fantastic!
Driving through the Alps was beyond beautiful! The mountains and scenery were fantastic!
Caleb and Evan weren't the only ones who crashed at some point along the drive.
Winding roads and tunnels through the mountains.
Giant loaf of bread we had gotten at the market the day before ... don't worry, I did share.
More tunnels.
We made a pit stop on our journey to Venice ... the bus driver is required to stop every so many hours to rest. So we all got out and ran around like little kids ... stretched our legs, took in the fresh air.
Caleb and Jed couldn't help themselves and had to climb the tree!
Our bus that carried us through many journeys in Europe.
Finally on the train into Venice! We had to stop on the mainland and catch the train across the water to go into Venice. At this point we were thrilled to be off the bus and in Italy!
Looking at the water, waiting to see new sites!
Ahhhh .... Venice, Italy!
This is the view right outside of the train station. It is right on the Grand Canal and the test was some sort of political statement. Can't tell you what it was for because I don't speak or read Italian. :)
Water Taxis!
Riding on the Grand Canal in Venice!
Ann and I standing on one of the bridges in Venice over the Grand Canal.
Roomie picture with Elin!!!
Laura, myself, Thea, and Ann ... the four of us will be spending the next week together after Venice on our spring break ... love these ladies!
San Marco's Square
Jed and I in San Marco Square
The water was a bit high that day, it came right up to the streets we walked on. In San Marco Square, there were platforms all over the place and Jan told us that they set them up and use them for walkways when there is really high water. There are no other options really ... wished I would have brought some galoshes like Abby and Haley did!
Every street and alley was so picturesque.
No, my camera was not crooked, that tower really is leaning. The city is sinking and some things have started to lean and it is noticeable.
Lots of shopping everywhere!
Love the old clock and fountains!
For dinner that night we made reservations at a great restaurant that was recommended in the Rick Steves' book. Before we had dinner, there was some wine outside at a small restaurant. Love these moments.
The place where we had dinner was so much fun. We felt like we were eating a family dinner at home. You ordered pasta for two or more and then everyone just put food on their plates from the dishes that were brought out. Venice has amazing seafood, so of course the pastas had seafood in them.
Great first day in Venice. This is a city to get lost in and explore.
